"I swear I made PAMA with good intentions. It was designed to automate things. Make everything more efficient. Use monsters to help with farming or mining... Until the day PAMA decided that the townspeople weren't already efficient enough already. Started making them "useful..." That was a long time ago. Since then, I've just being trying to stay one step ahead. Figure out how to stop it."
—Harper explaining the creation of PAMA. src
"We used to have competitors from all over travel here and play the games... At least until the others ruined it. Hadrian and Mevia let power go into their heads. They starting pitting people against each other just for sport. Forcing people to be here... it just isn't right."
—Harper explaining the corruption of the Builder Games and why she left it. src

Harper is a supporting protagonist in Minecraft: Story Mode developed by Telltale Games, she makes her first appearance in "Access Denied", Harper is the creator of PAMA, an artificial intelligence that got out of control. Since then, she has been trying to figure out how to stop her creation, eventually alongside Jesse. She is voiced by Yvette Nicole Brown.

Overview[]

Appearance[]

Harper is an inventor who wears a yellow jumpsuit outfit with a brown hoodie, black goggles, green eyeshadow, black gloves and black shoes. She has white hair, black eyes, gray eyebrows, and dark skin. Also revealed by a painting, Harper used to have black hair and black eyebrows around the time she created PAMA.

Personality[]

"I am probably the "nicest" Old Builder."
—Harper.

Harper is portrayed to be an intelligent, individual with a brave and resilient personality. She has a desire to help people, as shown when she created PAMA, a computer designed to maximize effeciency. However, PAMA soon turned against her and decided to put of all of the citizens of Crown Mesa under mind control by inserting Redstone Chips in their heads. while hiding from PAMA and looking for a way to either help it or shut it down, Harper blamed herself for her friends getting chipped and for PAMA stripping the world bare of resources. She also grew lonely, to the point when she built humanoid figures inside her home that comfort her at the press of a button. She programmed the robotic greeters so they can tell her to forgive herself, showing that she blames herself for all the trouble PAMA has caused. Harper also grows quite paranoid, as shown when first meeting Jesse and their friends. She thought they were up to something and behaved poorly towards them, until finding out that they weren't under PAMA's control. Despite that, Harper helped Jesse and Ivor escape PAMA and showed them where PAMA's central core is, before getting chipped herself. After PAMA is shut down and everyone under its control is freed, Harper is confronted by the people of Crown Mesa, who blame her for causing all the trouble by creating PAMA. Depending on the player's choices Jesse may or may not defend Harper, and she may, or may not be accepted back into the community.

At the beginning, she appears apprehensive and unfriendly. However, as the story progresses, she proves herself to be both loyal and caring towards Jesse's Gang. She is also a great inventor and is responsible for the creation of PAMA and the Mind-Control Headset. She is also very loyal to those she does befriend, such as Jesse's gang, to the point in which she is willing to stand up to Hadrian at one point. Harper also has a habit of eavesdropping on other people's conversations.

Background[]

Harper is one of The Old Builders. She, together with Hadrian, Mevia and Otto, built the Portal Network and invented the Games. They used to have competitors travel from all over to play in The Games. However, in time Hadrian and Mevia grew more power hungry and sadistic. They started to make people fight against each other, just for sport. Losers in the Games were forced to work in the mines, until they got another shot in the Games. Unknown to anyone, the Games was rigged, so nobody could win. Presumably for that reason, Harper left. Harper than founded a new home in Crown Mesa. In, time she build a "thinking machine" named PAMA; created to make everything more efficent, to make monster to help with farming or mining. But one day PAMA went rouge and began to make everyone in Crown Mesa "useful". Harper tried to convince PAMA to stop, to no avail. Harper was forced into hiding and became so lonely that she built "friend machines".

Trivia[]

  • Harper is the second person to have created a major antagonist in the series (PAMA) after Ivor created the Wither Storm.
    • However, her creation turned against her by will rather than its creator's command.
  • When Jesse is wearing the Mind-Control Headset, they can see the text "HARPER v 1.0.43.10" on-screen.
  • As a member of the Old Builders, she is known to have helped create The Portal Network.
  • As shown in a painting of her and a young PAMA, Harper used to have black hair. This also suggests that either Harper created PAMA long before the events of the game, or her hair grew white from stress caused by PAMA's betrayal.
    • It’s also a reference to Steve Jobs and his iconic pose with the macintosh.
  • Harper also seems like the Old Builders' counterpart to Ellegaard the Redstone Engineer.
  • At the end of Episode 8, Harper said that she would try to help the townspeople of Crown Mesa rebuild, saying that even though that was not her original home, it was the closest thing she had. This suggests that Harper came from another world. Earlier on in the episode, Harper mentions that she was from the Old Builder's World.
  • She is the only Old Builder to appear in more than one episode.
  • Harper and Otto are the only known Old Builders who are not corrupted.
  • Harper's final fate in Episode 8 depends on whether or not Jesse defends her from the citizens of Crown Mesa in Episode 7.
    • If Jesse does, they will supposedly accept Harper back into their community, and after Jesse gets the Portal Atlas and can find their way home, Harper will return to Crown Mesa and help her old friends recover from PAMA.
    • If Jesse doesn't defend Harper, the citizens of Crown Mesa will reject her and, after Jesse gets the Atlas, Harper will either find a new homeworld or help Otto fix the Builder Games. Jesse can suggest that she come with them (The New Order of the Stone), but while she appreciates the offer, she will reject it, as she feels she can't keep tacking herself on to other peoples lives.
  • Eric Stripe wanted Harper to return in season 2, but due to budget reasons she couldn't be in the game.
    • Eric Stripe confirmed that if Harper had appeared in Season 2, she and Ivor would have had a lab together in BeaconTown and she would have helped Ivor track down Soren[1]
      • The laboratory would be full of notes, maps and charts of Ivor trying to track Soren
